This project is funded by the Department of Literature Science at the University of Hamburg. »Modal« is a tool to annotate complex structures of texts. It facilitates advanced means for classifying, structuring and sorting text fragments. It enables easy collecting of contents that are linked back to their original source.

The preceding annotation tool, Catma currently used by students of Literary Science has grown historically. Its functionality is not intuitive and its performance drops when increasing the amount of annotations.
The ways we interact with all sorts of digital texts are very limited and rudimentary. Most of the time we cannot do more than add comments, or save them to read later.
Rethink digital annotating and make it a more contemporary intuitive process. Create a tool that makes complex text and research structures visible through annotation.
»Modal« is thought as an extension to Catma. Therefore it needs an export option and structure that make the annotations implementation into Catma possible.
In a workshop with the Literary Science students of the University Hamburg we explored different needs of annotation.
We discovered the most important aspects of annotation are discovering structures within or in between texts. These structures are only valuable because of their contexts. Still to analyse the various parts of them, they need to be regarded separately. We were also able to clarify the problems concerning Catma.
